Sigma is an upcoming console designed for playing retro games. So, a brand-new piece of technology designed specifically for enjoying all technology. Sounds weird at first but it’s actually something you should look forward to, especially if you’re retro game enthusiast.
According to the official IndieGOGO page, this tiny console will be capable of emulating 27 different systems starting with:
- ATARI 2600
- ATARI 7800
- ATARI ST
- GAME BOY
- GAME BOY ADVANCE
- GAME BOY COLOR
- GAME GEAR
- MAME (Multiple Arcade Machine Emulator)
- NINTENDO 64
- NES (Nintendo Entertainment System)
- NEO-GEO SYSTEM
- NEO-GEO POCKET
- NEO-GEO POCKET COLOR
- PC Engine
- SUPER NINTENDO (SNES)
- SEGA 32X
- SEGA CD
- SEGA GENESIS
- SEGA Master System
- Sinclair DX Spectrum
Now that’s a pretty wide variety of gaming systems, don’t you think? Just think about all those retro classics like Castlevania, Super Mario, Metroid and countless other games!
Also it is worth mentioning that this console is coming out probably around the same time as Nintendo’s NES Classic which is also a retro counsel but unlike Sigma it will only play Nintendo’s games made especially for the NES. If you’re planning on getting a retro console you might as well get a bunch of them.
Sigma will be capable of using any USB controller and will run properly with each and every one of them. Additionally you may connected to your smart phone or tablet use those instead. Tablets and smart phones can also be used to download some additional emulators and game ROMs from public sources around the Internet.
If you’re worried about being restricted to using wired controllers only, you should know that first 500 contributors on the Sigma’s IndieGOGO page will all receive some additional stuff like:
- 16GB microSD card
- USB gaming controllers
This clearly states that the console will be capable of using wireless controllers tho, these may require some additional purchases. Eventually, there’s bound to be some community made driver that allows us to use all kinds of 3rd party controllers like Xbox or PlayStation ones.
It also comes preloaded with 15 branded games of its own so you may unpack plug and play as soon as you get your own copy. Additionally, Sigma may be loaded with the memory card preloaded with all kinds of games you want to play. This basically means that you’ll be able to play not just the titles it comes preloaded with but also any videogame for any of the 27 supported systems as long as you are able to get your hands on them.
This may come as a problem since obtaining those games legally may be a bit problematic. Unless you own a physical copy of the game is considered illegal to download and play it and even in cases you do own a legitimate copy, it is still a gray area at best. Still, I’m sure that the community will eventually find a way to make it happen.
